Do you down the little steps you make, and only celebrate the big progress? Or are you too afraid to make any move at all, because of your fear of failure? To be honest, I have to answer those same questions as well, because sometimes I down the “little”. We can sometimes overlook the small steps and miss out on the progress those small steps spark. It’s amazing to watch babies, and young children reach their developmental milestones, because they are persistent. As parents, we cheer them on when they make one step or write one letter, because we want to encourage them to continue on. We have to learn to be that way with ourselves in pursuit of our goals.
Progress is progress. We cannot achieve something, without first making a move. For example, if you set a goal to exercise or write for 1 hour a week but only had time for 20 min that week, celebrate that you did put some time toward that goal…no matter how small. The next step is to put more time in to reach that goal of an hour. Consistency is more about staying the course, than how much of that course you conquered. Things do happen. Sometimes you can get sick or have to work late that may prevent you from giving time toward a goal you were working on for that day, but don’t give up. When distractions or roadblocks come, that is the perfect time to test how well you can overcome resistance because it will happen.
I encourage you as well as myself to appreciate the progress you have made so far. Once you put your hands to work, that is victory over fear, shame, procrastination, and doubt. Keep going!
