Do we listen when truth speaks or pretend to listen and go about our day? Are we really seeking change or another excuse to stay stuck? When Jesus spoke those words to the lame man, it became a significant turning point in that man’s life. No longer will he live under excuses but walk in Truth. Honestly, that is what some of us need to do with our lives right now. We need to decide whether to “stay lame” in self-pity, blame, shame, the past, or whatever the hinderance is or get up and walk. If you read the verses before that, (I encourage you to go check it out!), Jesus asks the man, “Did he want to get well?” For some of us, we would think Jesus was being sarcastic, but no….He was genuinely speaking the words this man needed to hear. He needed to decide if he wanted to become well. Even if no one stopped to put him the pool, will that still be his decision to become well.
Was he before like most of us…. Waiting around for someone to make the change within our life? Allowing our decisions to be predicated off someone else’s actions? Truth will always be truth, but it’s up to us to heed it and take action. Now when I speak of truth, I speak of God’s truth. It was important that Jesus spoke the words to him because He is truth. He come to set us free from our lame situations. Having faith means taking action and not allowing your situation to dictate your action. If you are still in the midst of your struggles, ask yourself this “Do you want to become well?” Regardless of the time that have already passed by, you must decide to get up.
“Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,”
John 5:8-9 NIV
